Benefits Of A Retreat

Looking to get away, but not sure where to go on holiday?

If you’re like me and you’ve never been on a retreat before and are curious about what all the hype is about, this article is for you!

A bit about me: I love to travel and when I have time off from my high-stress corporate job, I usually book an exotic beach vacation somewhere with friends and family. The only problem from my holiday ‘escape’ is that even though I’m away from the office, I still find that I’m answering emails and can’t entirely ‘shut off.’

So, I decided to take a leap of faith and embark on a 7-day retreat in the jungle of Costa Rica with 25 women from all over the world with, two well-known Instagram influencers who were our retreat facilitators - for my first ever retreat experience.

As you can expect, it was an all-vegan diet, no alcohol allowed, daily guided meditation, yoga and breathwork classes as well as other workshops and activities (surfing, spa treatments, and some much-needed R&R by the pool).

But in addition to all of this and coming home with a beautiful tan, glowing skin, 25 new friends and 5 pounds lighter – something more transformational happened.

What you ask? Exactly what all of your friends, the ads on social media, and articles you’ve read online say.



Something along the line of this…

According to a research study published in Translational Psychiatry (Nature), "regular holidays only bring about short-term improvements in well-being; whereas going on a week's yoga and meditation retreat can improve metabolism for the long-run."

Unlike my past holidays, when I came back and didn’t entirely get to ‘un-plug,’ when I was on the retreat, I actually didn’t have the need or desire to check my out of office emails, even though there was wifi!

I actually felt a sense of rejuvenation, even more so from after 3-week trips I’ve taken in the past. I also adopted (and kept!) a meditation practice and restored my love for yoga, which had gone stagnant during the pandemic.

Was it the magic in the jungle, the open-air yoga Shala, or the fact that I was held accountable and felt supported by 25 new friends for 7 days straight? All of this and so much more!

The biggest takeaway for me is that it truly was a transformational experience that helped me to keep and incorporate many of the healthy habits I started during the retreat, into my daily life back at home.

Some other takeaways – if you’re not convinced retreats are for you.

There are so many different kinds of retreats out there, find one that sparks joy in you! For example, if you love to cook, if you haven’t worked out in forever and are wanting to kick-start your workout routine and need some motivation or if you want to explore a different part of the world and don’t want to go solo. Follow your intuition and what “feels right.”

Nature heals – I love my i-phone, i-pad, and apple computer just like the rest of you but there is something to be said for turning your electronics off and going into nature. Mama Earth is powerful and if you allow her to, she can heal wounds, soften broken hearts or just help to quiet your mind and return a sense of ease and tranquility into your life.

The power of community – I think we can all agree after being in lock-down in some capacity during the pandemic, that there is something beautiful and much needed about human connection. I assure you, when you go on a retreat, you will make ever-lasting friendships and have fond memories for years to come.
